So why comply to standards?
If you're an escort or any other adult themed site owner you may be wondering why it needs to be standards compliant well the answer is simple ITS THE LAW. The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public.
Ok so its not a simple case of lawful/ unlawful and you're probably not going to be hauled before a court for having a site that does not conform to standards however there are 5 excellent reasons why you shoud ensure any new site is fully compliant or that your existing site is updated to make it compliant.
- 1.Making your site compliant is a sensible business act, if your website cannot be read by specialist software used by a disabled person then you won't get their business.
- 2.Standards compliant sites are better for Search Engine Optimisation, if your site is compliant then it can be read fully by google, a fully read site means higher rankings.
- 3.Compliant sites are cleaner, easier to read and faster, faster sites make happier surfers, happier surfers means more repeat visitors.
- 4.If your site is not accessible then you could be sued under the DDA, there have been a number of high profile cases in Australia and the U.S. where a site owner has been successfully sued by a member of the public (Maguire vs SOCOG 24/08/2000,Ramada.com and Priceline.com)
- 5. And finally, if you use a reputable company which takes the time to work on the things you dont see such as standards then the things you do see (such as punctuation, spelling, layout etc) are sure to be of a high quality.
But dont take our word for it, see for yourself, any of these sites will give you information on the DDA and the law in general: Webcredible, w3.org, wikipedia, RNIB to name but a few or try searching in google for "web accessibility"
